This summer we had the privilege to work with Boston's own Get On Down on a project of epic proportions. We were asked to print the outer boxes and record jackets for a Limited Edition 4xLP box of Dinosaur L (Artur Russel). With a print total well into the tens of thousands, this projectwill forever be the face of the summer of 2011. Below are some of the process photos taken throughout life of this project.

Four AntiDesigns team members, Jay LaCouture, Keith Zoo, Josh Falk, and Mikey Maker, got together to collaborate on a one of a kind screen print collage for an upcoming collective group show. Using 15-25 different pre-existing screens, the group painted 3 pieces of found-cardboard using somewhere around 100 passes of the squeegee.The resulting piece is now showing at the Lincoln Arts Project gallery in Waltham, MA until October 28, 2011, as part of the Boston Art Collective show, curated by Fish McGill.

If you've ever screen printed before, you know that the clean up process is usually the least fun part of the job. Over the past few years we've had our share of sink mishaps... from cleaning screens in our kitchen sink in Fenway, to our kitchen sink in Dorchester (ha!), to two or three slop sinks in Norwood... regardless of the sink, the splatter factor is always an issue. I think we painted the walls of the Norwood studio's "sink room" (read bathroom) every 6 months or so.

Step into the now and we just picked up this dream sink setup. Back lit, splatter walls, and enough water pressure to push a hole into your 305 mesh - this sink has made our year.

He did have this monster space in the basement that we could move into for a month and a half... and this was our home for the beginning of summer 2011.

The past few months have been crazy, and I've finally carved out a moment to post some photos of the studio move from this past May. AntiDesigns left its tiny studio space (literally around 130sq ft) in Norwood, MA to move into the Distillery in South Boston. The Norwood space was sort of miserable all-around. It had low ceilings (6 1/2 feet), death dust, a loooong commute out there, and you had to climb a ladder to get to it. If you're wondering why you were never invited out there, well... there was a reason! But all that being said, it was our home for 5 years and we loved the shit out of it. Many thanks go out to Luke Adams for hosting us for so long... Anti's forever in your debt!

Printing Boston's Subway Map - Video

Through our friends at Ward Maps and Boston Coasters, AntiDesigns printed the MBTA's subway map on a couple different t-shirts and hoodie styles. I put together this little video to show the process. Everything will be available on MBTAGifts.com once the site goes live...

This print is a 5-color, hand-pulled screen print. The red and blue lines were printed wet-on-wet, as were the orange and green lines. This video was shot while I printed the last two shirts of the production, that's why you see each of the screens come down twice. The product developers decided to do runs of shirts WITH the station names and WITHOUT them. I really like the look of the subway map without the station names, and tip my hat to the people pushing to do both styles...

The Distillery Gallery is pleased to announce “Dots Per Inch”, an exhibit of printmaking and graphic design. This show focuses not only on techniques, but also the creativity, artistic integrity, and entrepreneurial spirit involved with such disciplines. Works by independent designers will showcase the attention to aesthetics that goes into their craft, whether it be traditional letterpress, screen printing, or modern digital design. Along with works of various mediums displayed in both proper gallery fashion and salon-style, the show will also include a section of wall space dedicated to collaborative installation where artists will print layers of mixed imagery directly onto the wall surface.

The opening reception will provide the public with an opportunity to meet the artists, ask questions about processes, and purchase independent, locally-made goods from the “merch table” set up in the middle of the gallery. Exhibitors include: AntiDesigns, Dance Party Massacre, David Clemente, Dyslexic Press, Repeat Press, Carrie Siegel, Union Press, & James Weinberg.

Robot GUTS 3: Fish McGill & Friends

What's inside a giant robot? Let's find out and learn a thing or two or three. You are invited to join Boston Artist Fish McGill in the installation & creation of two 12-foot tall Robot drawings Monday-Thursday in the 301 Gallery. Come help work on a giant drawing of a Robot's GUTS and gears on the gallery walls throughout the week. Answer the ongoing question, "What is inside a Robot anyway?" The collaborative drawing project will shine light on this subject. Computers, cell phones, wiener dogs, rocket parts, you name it and it is in there.

The kickoff is on Friday February 4, 2010 from 6-9PM in the 301 Gallery. We will install the two 12 foot Robots in the space. Be ready to climb ladders and drill panels as we hang the colorful robot parts and prepare for a week’s worth of work. The 301 gallery will be open all week February 7-10 during the day and in the evenings. Come draw with us or hang out with some Robots. Lessons on creating stencils and how to make wheat paste will be demonstrated on Wednesday & Thursday afternoons. Special guest artists from the Boston area will be stopping by in the evenings to draw with everybody who participates throughout the week.

At the fancy pants closing reception on February 10 from 6-9PM please arrive dressed to impress for some milk and cookies as the Robot’s panels will be raffled off for free to all the guests at the Robot GUTS closing reception in the 301 Gallery.

"We took this opportunity to talk to Falk and find out what went into to these hand-screened/spray-painted prints.

TTHU: How did this collaboration come about?
FALK: I created a t-shirt design with AntiDesigns and this image is an alteration of that. This one is for the art collectors out there.
TTHU: Where did you guys do the screenprinting?
FALK: Jay LaCouture of AntiDesigns did the screenprinting. It is a multi-color print, so the layout and the inks had to be done by Jay, a true professional. I picked these particular colors because I wanted something loud and obnoxious, like being sucked into the headlights on a lonely dark road. Of course, I don’t drive, so I guess that’s how I picture headlights looking, but you get the point!
TTHU: How did you choose cardboard as the backdrop for this work?
FALK: We are always trying to come up with something different, and if we don’t need to kill a tree or skin a calf then why would we? Jay found a flat-screen television box and I rummaged through dumpsters, and next thing we know we had enough perfect stock to complete the project.
TTHU: It’s always nice to take someone’s garbage and make it beautiful. If you want to come by our office we have a half-eaten ham sandwich and some used condoms that might make for interesting canvas!
FALK: Hmmm…not sure I have enough paint to cover a condom of that girth.
TTHU: Hahaha. Touché! Are the prints signed and numbered?
FALK: Yes sir. Signed and numbered by Josh Falk.
TTHU: What can we look forward to seeing from you in the future?
FALK: I’m in the process of developing a new mixed-media piece that I will be sure to let you know about when it is ready.
TTHU: Sounds great. Thanks for your time. We have really enjoyed watching your work develop and grow over the past few years.

Design Inspiration:Shine 2001

Used to be real big on parties in New England and have this giant collection of flyers from 99-2004. These flyers were a huge inspiration for me when I first started doing graphics work around the end of that era. I was going through some stuff at the house and stumbled on my collection of big flyers that don't fit into 8x11 folders and figured it'd be cool to put some of these things back out there in the universe.

This one is for an event that was called Shine put on by Kingsize and massconcerts that took place at the Worcester Palladium June 9, 2001. The flyer is about 18" wide and when its opened up, its about 24" tall. When I started taking the photos (I don't have a scanner that big), I realized - the woman in the design is levitating over a flying, futuristic 8-color screen printing press (Awesome). I see she has 4 arms, but I bet she runs the squeegees with her mind - just 'cause she can. Feeling the orange, blue, silver, white colorway and the accents separating the two rooms on the inside of the flyer are well done.

Mexico City's Deniol Alva releases his newest collection of tees, Los Reyes Del Hip Hop, a collaboration with Boston's Anti Designs & UGHH.com. Fresh off his capsule collection with Upper Playground, Deniol keeps the momentum with 3 takes on some of Hip Hop's greatest - Big Daddy Kane, KRS One & Afrika Bambaataa. Influenced by colorful Mexico City, Deniol describes his home city as..."a good mash-up of fresh breakbeats with the nastiest old-school cumbia. We are enjoying our surreal, noisy, flashy streets, and we´re spicing up our creativity with that folklore." Deniol captures this same mix in Los Reyes Del Hip Hop collection by putting a twist on the names of these classic artists and visualizing them in a colorful, original Mexican style. I've thought about laying it all out and doing a 3 or 4 part series on the basics of getting yourself started with screen printing at your house, mainly because the free resources that are out there are pretty scarce. And even when you do find something useful, it usually just scratches the surface.

Turns out, there's a pretty awesome graphic novel called Do-It-Yourself Screenprinting by John Isaacson that does a great job walking you through everything. I picked it up the other a couple years back at Lucy Parson's Center. It's all hand-drawn comic panels, and it walks you through everything from washing out screens in your shower (yikes) to printing on a 6-color press and working in a real shop. It's half "how-to" and half "story of how I learned to screen print."

Very well done, and available on the interweb.

AntiDesigns got some good press from the people at Thrillist on Monday this week. We had no idea that was happening, so it was a real nice surprise - big thanks go to whomever was involved in making that happen. The original link is here.

We got a bunch of feedback from the post and one thing I'd like to make clear is that we don't have a shirt available with the tricycle dude from back bay on it. We never had one, actually. We did joke about it, a whole lot though. So much so, that (no lie) on my way back from MAGIC two weeks ago I sketched out this little ditty out from a quick phone photo I got of the man in question this past summer while he was riding through the Commons:

So when I read the post and caught this line: "with an urban streetwear vibe and decidedly local flavor, like a wearable version of that dude who rides the cart bike through Back Bay screaming WOOO" I gotta wonder who the hell these people are and how they got inside our heads!

Btw that hand-drawn header action on the top of thrillist/boston is very nice.

I am a part of a bi-weekly art jam for my full-time gig at FableVision called What the Doodle?. Each week someone in the studio generates a random word using a funny button on the internets somewhere and everyone creates a visual representation of the word. Realized the other day it was high time to pick up the full version of the SketchBook app from AutoDesk. It's only $2.99, pretty ridiculous. With the full version you get brushes, the ability to transform and move layers, the addition of a gallery feature that lets you go back in and edit older files (whereas the free version you create and then save a flattened jpg, then start over), AND the ability to email a psd. Pretty slick.
